About

The mission

Forecast California is the definitive portal for the Golden State's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean, and highway-clear for all 58 counties, from the North Coast redwoods to the Mexican border.

No state has more weather in it: the Pacific marine layer and coastal fog, the Central Valley and desert heat, the Sierra snowpack that runs the water year, the atmospheric rivers of winter, and the Santa Ana and Diablo winds that drive California's fire season. Forecast California is being built to tell that whole story — county by county, region by region.

The design language

The look borrows from the American Interstate system — the reflective paper, the green guide signs, the blue service signs, the brown recreation signs, and the red-white-and-blue route shields — set in Overpass, the typeface drawn from the Highway Gothic lettering on those signs. California takes a warm golden-sand paper and a California-poppy orange accent — its own note in a network where Florida runs on gold, Georgia on peach, and Alabama on russet.

Metro & region sites

California is covered close-up by 9 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastcalifornia.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast California, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

California has three live neighbors — every state it touches: Forecast Arizona across the Colorado River, Forecast Oregon over the Siskiyous where I-5 crosses at Siskiyou Summit, and Forecast Nevada over the Sierra crest at Tahoe and down the Mojave to Primm — all tinted in their own accent on the hero map and clickable from it. The rest of Forecast Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Maine, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Carolinas, Alaska, Dakotas, Arizona, Missouri, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Mexico, Nevada, Kentucky, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Hawaii, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Virginia, New England, Great Plains, Canada are part of the same system.
