The marine layer runs the coast half the year and the Santa Anas run it the other half — offshore, bone-dry, gusting through the passes at freeway speed and turning any spark into a fire that outruns people. Then the atmospheric rivers arrive and the burn scars come down as debris flows.

The basin's heat and smog pile against the San Bernardinos, the Santa Anas funnel down the Cajon and the San Gorgonio passes at freeway speed, and the fires that follow — Old, Line, Apple, El Dorado — run uphill into the same foothill towns. Over the pass it is high desert, and past Banning it is Sonoran.
